Town Posts Puffer's Pond Alert as Drought Restrictions and Juneteenth Week Arrive
AMHERST — An active town alert on Puffer's Pond swimming conditions is the most urgent item on the municipal board as Amherst enters a busy stretch that includes four public bodies convening Wednesday and town offices shutting Friday for Juneteenth.

The town has posted a live "Puffer's Pond Swimming Update" to its homepage alerts section. Residents planning a summer swim there should check amherstma.gov for current conditions before heading out; the alert's presence suggests swimmers may encounter changed access or water-quality conditions.
Drought water use restrictions remain in force across town. Officials have noted Amherst's own water supply is stable and not directly threatened by the Connecticut River Valley drought, but the restrictions are required under the town's Water Management Act Registration. With temperatures climbing, outdoor irrigation and other high-volume uses are affected.
Rental property owners who missed the June 15 annual permit renewal deadline now face late fees under the town's residential rental registration program. The town had been circulating reminders ahead of the cutoff.
Town offices will be closed this Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, a state and federal holiday.
