Plainfield Planning Board Moves Forward With MIT Solar Partnership Ahead of Town Meeting

Email Text Facebook X

PLAINFIELD -- February 4, 2026, Plainfield Planning Board pursues MIT partnership on solar siting as new state clean energy rules loom. A state clean energy official identified as Allison, based in Greenfield, briefed the board at its February 4 meeting on Massachusetts' new consolidated local permitting process and a site suitability scoring tool taking effect July 1, 2026, telling members that the overhaul "is really to help the state meet its obligation, it's not really to help small towns navigate this process." The board learned that three solar applications already moving through local permitting are fully exempt from the new regulations. Planning Board chair Peter described a proposed collaboration with the MIT Renewable Energy and Climate Clinic, whose doctoral students would conduct anonymous stakeholder interviews and public information sessions beginning in February, producing a community benefits agreement framework at no cost to the town, funded entirely by MIT. The chair tied the effort directly to a May annual town meeting deadline for zoning bylaw revisions, warning that missing that window delays any changes by a full year. A public hearing on the Blue Wave solar application, flagged by the board as missing key details on battery storage and sound mitigation, is set for February 11.
