Granby Board of Health Moves to Regulate Compost Operations

Other Committee · Meeting of June 24, 2026

Granby Board of Health moves toward regulating commercial composting after rats found at Taylor Street site. Member Miles reported live and dead rats at Banana Compost's food-waste operation near Red Fire Farm, after the state Department of Environmental Protection's Dan Hall had already cited the pile for insufficient carbon material. Chair Bill proposed a 500-foot setback, the distance used in Granby's piggery and firearms rules, as a hearing starting point, and said he would consult Town Counsel Brian O'Toole on the town's authority to regulate.

The board also held the Chateau Harmony food operation to outdoor-only status, with Building Commissioner Tom Quinlan warning "there's no room for the town of Granby ... to circumvent state minimum codes," and directed staff to get written DEP confirmation of a repair deadline for a septic system at 12 Ken Lane after a contentious exchange between the resident and a neighbor.
