Finance Committee · Meeting of May 14, 2026

Amherst Finance Committee reviewed public safety budgets and heard a plan to expand fire staffing. Fire Chief Stromgren said the proposal would take line firefighters from 46 to 52 in just over 24 months, calling it "the most significant proposed change to the Amherst Fire Department in the last 30 years." Police Chief Gabriel Ting said the department was heading to 40 officers against 45 allotted positions and handled just under 20,000 calls for service. CRESS Director Camille Theriot said six responders limit the team to eight-to-four hours and that a grant ending June 30 will cost a staff position.

The committee adjourned by unanimous roll call.
