NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton City Council kept its immigration enforcement resolution on the May 7 agenda after first reading. Councilors voted 9-0 to add U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern and the Smith Vocational superintendent as recipients. Residents including Dave Reutemann, Tusi Gastenguay and Sharon Halsmith urged language calling on the attorney general and district attorney to enforce state criminal law against federal agents.
Councilor Meg Robbins offered a suggested amendment, and a motion to refer the item to Legislative Matters was withdrawn. The council also voted 9-0 to send a zoning amendment to hearings. It would exempt two-family homes from site plan review and raise the intermediate threshold from 2,000 to 2,500 square feet.
Director Carolyn Misch said such review "takes two to three months." Order 26.057, reprogramming funds for JFK roof design, went to the May 7 consent agenda.
