Amherst Public Art Commission Seeks Artists For Two New Initiatives

AMHERST — The Amherst Public Art Commission opened a call for artists this week for two public art initiatives, Electrify Amherst and a new Town Hall Art Gallery, with submissions for the Electrify Amherst project due August 7.

TOWN HALL The Public Art Commission's call for submissions covers two separate projects, Electrify Amherst and the Town Hall Art Gallery, according to a town announcement Wednesday. Artists interested in Electrify Amherst have until August 7 to submit their work; the town did not specify a separate deadline for the Town Hall Art Gallery portion.

The town also reminded residents that cooling centers and outdoor facilities remain open as extreme heat continues this summer, and that a survey on cable television service is open to all residents, subscribers and non-subscribers alike, through August 7.

Town Hall also posted an update on its zoning study for the future of the Hampshire College campus, the effort launched after Hampshire's announcement it will end academic operations after December 2026. The update did not detail new findings beyond confirming the study remains underway.

COMMUNITY & ARTS The Electrify Amherst and Town Hall Art Gallery call gives artists a shot at two visible commissions in town-owned spaces. Guidelines for both projects are available through the Public Art Commission's announcement, with the Electrify Amherst submission window closing August 7.

COMING UP The Zoning Board of Appeals meets Thursday, July 23, and the Cable Television Advisory Committee meets Friday, July 24. Also Friday, the Downtown Summer Concert Series continues downtown, followed Saturday, July 25, by the Amherst Farmers Market and the town's Fun Saturday Mornings programming.
