NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton Historical Commission voted 2-3 against preserving a mold-damaged Crescent Street house, clearing its demolition. The commission heard that homeowner Mr. Cook had spent 13 years battling mold and water damage he says sickened his family, with member Michael saying "I'm not sure that preferably preserved is going to provide any kind of clarity in the next 10 months that is going to change anything." Because a four-vote majority of the seven-member commission was required to impose a preservation delay, the 2-3 tally means demolition can proceed without delay. Separately, the commission unanimously recommended $15,000 in Community Preservation Act funding for the Academy of Music's new main stage curtain, presented by executive director Ray Dumont, and unanimously found a basement window replacement at 153-192 Main Street an "appropriate, sensitive treatment." That item drew pointed public criticism from former Ward 3 City Councilor Quaverly Rothenberg, who told the commission, "we are building a bike lane over children's futures."
