School Committee · Meeting of October 8, 2026

NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton School Committee adopted a Protect Act policy protecting immigrant students from federal immigration enforcement, voting 9-0 with one member recorded as present. Superintendent Anna Maria Azarloza paused a planned assistant-principal and "culture and climate specialist" pilot at Leeds Elementary after staff emailed concerns it wouldn't restore direct services; a motion to refer the pilot to subcommittees failed 3-7. Kindergarten teacher Holly Taylor said Leeds has only five of the legally required 6.5 special-education teachers.

Business Administrator Anne-Marie reported $5.4 million in FY27 year-to-date spending and $38.1 million remaining, with legal services $106,918.30 against a $78,000 FY26 budget. Member Michael Stein said the pilot "has tremendous budgetary implications." The committee also voted 7-2 to require annual subcommittee chair elections and appointed Anthony Morgan clerk, 9-0.
