Granby School Committee Delays Vote on Umpiring Club
School Committee · Meeting of October 6, 2026
Granby School Committee delays vote on a teacher-led umpiring club over disclosed Little League ties. Special education teacher Mr. Albano proposed a free extracurricular Student Baseball and Softball Officiating Club for grades seven through 12, disclosing his volunteer role as Belchertown Little League's umpire-in-chief and board member.
"I have disclosed that relationship because I recognize that it creates a legitimate question for the district to review," he said. Members withheld a vote, directing staff to review legal questions and survey student interest before the item returns in November. Separately, the committee unanimously adopted a 2027-2030 strategic plan, accepted Superintendent Mary Jane's "proficient" performance rating, approved a $1,770 textbook-to-software fund transfer, and heard that Granby Junior Senior High School was named one of just 56 Massachusetts "schools of recognition" for MCAS progress.
