Northampton Zoning Board Delays Solar Canopy Vote, Seeks Street-Level Renderings

Northampton Zoning Board continues solar canopy hearing after members say they cannot assess aesthetic impact without renderings. The board voted 3-0 at its January 8 meeting to push the findings hearing for Parallel Product Solar Energy, LLC to February 12 at 5:30 p.m., requesting that the applicant submit street-level visual renderings — showing the view looking north on Route 5 — at least 24 to 48 hours before the hearing. The proposal calls for 10 solar canopies, each reaching approximately 18 feet above grade, over the existing non-conforming auto salvage yard at 182 Mount Tom Road, map ID 39-39.

Chair David Bloomberg and members Elizabeth Silver and Maureen Scanlon all said they supported the project in principle but could not determine whether it would be "substantially more detrimental" without seeing how the structures would appear from the road. The board also discussed potentially conditioning any approval on a green buffer along the site's western edge, adjacent to the railroad tracks that separate the property from Route 5.
