Hadley ZBA Approves Garage Rebuild and Home Addition at 109 Middle Street

Zoning Board · Meeting of August 6, 2026

Hadley Zoning Board approves garage rebuild and home addition at 109 Middle Street for aging-in-place use. The three-member panel, chaired by Andrew Bombardier and including Associate Jason Bohonowicz and member Iris Tang, voted 3-0 Thursday to grant a finding under MGL Chapter 40A, Section 6, allowing owner-applicant Pauline Keener to reconstruct a preexisting nonconforming garage on its original footprint, add a second-story living area with two bathrooms, and connect the structure to the century-old main house. The garage sits less than two feet from the side property line.

Bombardier noted that virtually every house on Middle Street is similarly nonconforming and said he saw no increased detriment to the neighborhood. "We are being encouraged to help people create more housing, create more flexibility in housing for things like aging in place," Bombardier said, citing recent state zoning reform. No neighbors appeared in opposition.
