City Council · Meeting of October 6, 2026

Easthampton's Public Safety Committee weighed a new e-bike and scooter ordinance but took no vote. Mayor Derby presented a revised draft requiring parental notice, impoundment and a state classification sticker, saying state law caps municipal fines at "max $300" despite a stalled state bill he said proposed penalties up to $255,000. Derby also called the Main Street-South Street rotary the city's "most dangerous intersection," citing possible Chapter 90 funding.

Councilor Markey estimated signal design and construction would cost between $1 million and $2 million. Resident Thomas Stroud told the committee "people are driving too fast on every street," pointing to a 2017 Complete Streets plan with little follow-through. Councilors approved July's minutes unanimously and voted to adjourn, and moved their next meeting to November 10.
