EASTHAMPTON — The Easthampton City Council voted 8-0 to adopt a resolution urging the city treasurer to divest from companies linked to human rights violations in Israel and Palestine. Councilor Jamrock-McQuaid and Vice President Jadzik co-sponsored the measure, citing more than 535 resident signatures and the council's 2024 ceasefire resolution. The non-binding resolution targets an estimated $454,000 the city has invested in firms including GE Aerospace, RTX and Palantir, and leaves the final call to City Treasurer Brooke Johnson.
More than 40 residents spoke during a nearly three-hour hearing, most in support. Finance Committee Chair Tom Peake said the panel revised the language with the city solicitor to limit legal exposure before advancing it 3-0. "This resolution is really about having the ability to determine where our city dollars get invested," Jadzik said.
Councilor Tamara Smith's vote was not recorded after her remote connection dropped during the roll call.
