Board Loosens Septic Tank Rule, Saving Thousands
Board of Health · Meeting of July 28, 2026
Granby Board of Health eases septic tank rule, could save homeowners up to $12,000. Chairman Bill, joined by members Miles and Lee, approved new language letting homeowners keep a sound septic tank under 1,500 gallons instead of mandatory replacement, with supplier pricing showing tanks running $1,250 to $1,620 wholesale before installation. The board also fielded an escalating rat complaint near a Taylor Street composting operation, with resident Tara La Flamme reporting "dead and dying rats" in her yard, and scheduled an Aug. 12 hearing on a proposed commercial-composting setback rule.
Separately, the board declined to approve a "tight tank" for a proposed commercial market, telling applicants it "can't take on" enforcement authority that rests with MassDEP, and voted to refer a long-stalled failed septic system on Ken Lane, nearing a state two-year deadline, to a Hampshire County collaborative for resolution.
