Amherst Preservation Commission Approves Landmark Door Restoration 6-0
Historic Preservation · Meeting of July 14, 2026
Amherst Preservation Commission unanimously approves restoration of a locally designated landmark's front door funded by federal grant. The commission voted 6-0 on July 14 to issue a certificate of appropriateness for the front entryway of the Harlem Rome Community Center, a project financed through a Community Development Block Grant and required to meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. Architect Jeff Kletcher of All Associates said the painted front door will be stripped, repainted, and fitted with satin brass hardware matched to existing pieces, while the historically significant transom window will be protected and restored.
The commission was told the approval clears the way for submission to the Massachusetts State Historic Preservation Office before construction begins. Separately, a staff member announced that two of five pending local landmark nominations, the Key Bank building and One Poster Court in Amherst, are scheduled for presentation to the Select Board at a 7 p.m. public hearing on July 27.
