Amherst Launches Zoning Study for Closing Hampshire College Campus

AMHERST -- Amherst officials launched a zoning study to plan the future of the closing Hampshire College campus this week, as Town Manager Paul Bockelman named a new director of senior services and the town moved to Level 2 water use restrictions heading into peak summer.

The Town of Amherst has begun a zoning study for the Hampshire College campus after the private college announced it will cease academic operations after December 2026. Officials said the study will develop zoning options to prepare the property for future uses once Hampshire's departure is complete.

Bockelman announced the appointment of Daniel Garcia as the town's new director of senior services; Garcia is expected to start July 20. The town also moved to Level 2 water use restrictions, and officials reminded residents that cooling centers and outdoor facilities remain open for anyone seeking a cool, safe space during the summer heat.

Separately, renovations are underway at the Bangs Community Center, including health and safety, accessibility, and Senior Center improvements as well as work near Room 101. The building will stay open throughout construction, with completion expected in early 2027. The town is also inviting residents to weigh in on a survey about local cable television service, open through Friday, August 7, whether or not they currently subscribe.

The Amherst Elementary School Building Committee meets Friday, July 17. That evening also brings the Downtown Summer Concert Series and office hours with state Rep. Mindy Domb. The Amherst Farmers Market runs Saturday, July 18. On Monday, July 20, the Town Council and the Finance Committee hold a special joint meeting for a public forum on appropriations outside the annual budget, followed by a regular Town Council meeting the same evening.
