Northampton Board of Health moves toward a nicotine-free generation vote, targeting a public forum in February. The board heard from Ken Elstein, a Belchertown Board of Health member whose town adopted the birth-year-based nicotine sales ban in December 2024, and advocate Heather Warner, who urged the board not to delay and leave another cohort of young people unprotected. Health Commissioner Meredith O'Leary reported that 21 Massachusetts municipalities have now passed nicotine-free generation, following the Supreme Judicial Court's unanimous March 2024 ruling upholding Brookline's policy.

Peter Brennan of the New England Convenience Store and Energy Marketers Association spoke against the proposal during public comment, warning it would harm retailers and depress business values "overnight." The board's current path points to a public forum likely in February, a board discussion in March, and a formal hearing and potential vote in April. O'Leary also briefed the board on new state cannabis social consumption regulations, noting Northampton must opt in through a city council ordinance or voter referendum before any licensed consumption site could open — and that neither the mayor nor any city councilor has yet moved to champion such an ordinance.
