School Committee · Meeting of October 27, 2026

BELCHERTOWN — The Belchertown School Committee voted unanimously to raise substitute teacher pay from a flat $100 daily rate to an hourly scale reaching $26 for licensed substitutes, citing competition from Pathfinder Regional Vocational Technical High School. A district administrator said the district currently spends roughly $70,000 a year covering classes internally when no substitute is available. The committee also approved 2026-27 strategic plan action plans and heard a presentation showing grade 6 students posted the second-highest student growth percentile in Massachusetts on MCAS, while the district's overall accountability score reached 49 out of 100 against a statewide rating of 36.

One member said, "If you were going to Moneyball a town and find the lowest taxes for the best achievement, you're in one," noting the district spends $17,886 per pupil, among the lowest in the state. Members also raised concerns about the town's 70-30 free cash split between schools and municipal operations, with one member urging officials to "slow that or make it less drastic" as the fiscal year 2028 budget process begins.
